About the platform

Built by us, for us

Afro Queer is an LGBTQ+ community, culture and events platform rooted in East Africa.

We started with a simple belief: LGBTQ+ people in East Africa deserve spaces that are beautiful, safe and unapologetically ours.

Not hidden corners. Not borrowed rooms. Places where a lesbian couple can dance at sunset, where a trans woman can walk the runway, where a non-binary artist can hang their work on the wall and where friends and family stand beside us in the crowd.

Afro Queer brings together events, stories, photography and community into one home. We host pride nights, retreats and festivals in Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Kenya, and we tell the stories of the people who make this scene what it is.

Proud. Visible. Together. It is more than a line — it is how we move.

What we stand for

Six words we live by

01

Community

We build rooms — real and digital — where LGBTQ+ East Africans can find each other, rest, and be held.

02

Visibility

We put our faces, names and stories forward, on our own terms, because being seen changes what is possible.

03

Expression

Fashion, music, art, dance, words. We make space for every form our joy and truth want to take.

04

Culture

Queer East African culture is rich, layered and alive. We document it, celebrate it and pass it on.

05

Connection

From Dar to Zanzibar to Nairobi — we connect people, collectives and cities into one wide family.

06

Celebration

Because joy is resistance. Because we deserve nights we will talk about for years.

Be part of it.
